This August, Get Physical release Most Wanted 2018, a round-up of the best tracks released on the label in the first half of the year.
2018—the German label’s 16th year—has been a standout one, with a mixture of long-time associates and smartly A&Red new talent all coming up with the goods. The label’s sound continues to subtly evolve and is always warm, groove driven and melodic, with a great crew in South Africa as well as across the rest of the world. Their Body Language and other seasonal compilations continue to lead the way and this latest is a great overview.
The eclectic but coherent selection kicks off with Super Flu’s big remix of Ryan Murgatroyd’s ’Something Said’, a tribal call to arms that awakens things in style before pumping house from Roland Clarke, shapeshifting tech from Emanuel Satie and a warm, slick, deep remix of DJ Pierre from French talent Djebali. The loose, percussive grooves of Blond:ish then raise the energy levels and elsewhere Ricardo Villalobos’s much talked about remix of Phuture brings high pressure acid minimalism.
Further remixes from Jonas Rathsman, Aero Manyelo and Andre Lodemann & Fabian Dikof offer thoughtful melodic house with rich synth work, and Adisyn sinks you into a cavernous and dubbed out roller that has proven a perfect warm up tune. There is more propulsive stuff from m.O.N.R.O.E., dreamy vocal grooves from South African star Aero Manyelo and a final m.O.N.R.O.E. remix that leaves you in a true house reverie.
Most Wanted 2018 is perfect contemporary snapshot of one of dance music’s most essential labels.
